The SEAI heat pump grant is worth up to €14,500 for a house and up to €11,500 for an apartment. The figure for a house went up in October 2026, when a new €2,000 boiler scrappage grant was added to the old maximum of €12,500.

But €14,500 is a ceiling, not a fixed amount. The grant is really three separate grants that you claim in one application, and whether you get all three depends on your home and on your installer’s design. This article explains what each part pays for, what changed in October, and what it means if you have already applied.

The grant is three grants in one

The heat pump grant comes from SEAI, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, under its Better Energy Homes scheme. It is not one payment for one thing. It is a bundle of three separate grants that you claim through a single application: one for the heat pump itself, one for upgrading your radiators or underfloor heating, and one for taking out your old heating system.

The heat pump grant is up to €14,500 for a house, in three parts: up to €10,500 for the heat pump unit, up to €2,000 for central heating and €2,000 for boiler scrappage

1. The heat pump unit: up to €10,500

This is the biggest part, for installing the heat pump system. Every approved installation gets it.

2. Central heating: up to €2,000

This part pays for new radiators or underfloor heating. It is only paid where your installer’s design needs them. If the design keeps your existing radiators, this part does not apply.

3. Boiler scrappage: €2,000

This part is for removing an oil or gas boiler, a solid fuel system or electric storage heaters. It is also paid where a home has no central heating. It is the new part of the grant, added in October 2026. If your apartment has electric storage heaters, they count, the same as a boiler.

Why €14,500 is a ceiling, not a promise

The central heating and scrappage parts depend on your installer’s design and on what you are replacing. The grant also can never be more than the cost of the works. So ask your contractor which parts apply to your job before you budget.

The maximum by type of heat pump

The ceiling also depends on which type of heat pump you install, and on whether your home is a house or an apartment.

System House Apartment
Air to water €14,500 €11,500
Ground source to water €14,500 €11,500
Water to water €14,500 €11,500
Exhaust air to water €14,500 €11,500
Air to air €9,500 €9,500

These are maximum amounts. Two more figures are worth knowing:

  • Replacing an existing heat pump. If yours was never grant-aided and is no longer under warranty, you can get up to €6,500 (€4,500 for an apartment) to replace it. The central heating and scrappage grants do not apply.
  • The Technical Assessment. Separate to the amounts above, SEAI gives €200 towards a Technical Assessment if your home needs one. That is a visit from an SEAI-registered technical advisor who measures your home’s heat loss. The €200 is only paid if you go on to get the heat pump grant, and it comes with the rest of your grant.

What changed in October 2026

A new €2,000 boiler scrappage grant

The biggest change is the new scrappage grant. It brings the maximum for a house to €14,500, up from €12,500.

If you have already applied

You do not need to start again. If you have already applied and your works are not finished, or you are waiting on payment, SEAI says it will add the €2,000 automatically where you are eligible.

The 2021 rule has not changed for heat pumps

Solar grants now cover homes built before 2025. That change covers solar PV and solar thermal only. For the heat pump grant, your home still has to be built and occupied before 2021. A home built and occupied in 2021 or later does not qualify.

More detail is still to come

SEAI was still publishing the full terms of the October changes when we wrote this, and Budget 2027 may add more. Check seai.ie before you act on any figure here.

Common questions

Will I get the full €14,500?

Not always. €14,500 is the most a house can get, and only with an air to water, ground source, water to water or exhaust air heat pump. You only get the central heating part if your installer’s design needs new radiators or underfloor heating, and the scrappage part if you are taking out an old heating system or have no central heating.

I applied before October. Do I get the extra €2,000?

If your works are not finished, or you are waiting on payment, SEAI says it will add the €2,000 automatically where you are eligible.

My home was built in 2022. Can I get the heat pump grant now?

No. The October changes opened solar grants to homes built before 2025, but the heat pump grant is still only for homes built and occupied before 2021.
