Why we wrote it
There’s up to €14,500 available towards a heat pump, but getting it means working through BER ratings, heat loss checks, lists of registered installers and two separate ways to claim.
Most of the advice online comes from companies who want to install one for you. We don’t sell or install heat pumps. We wrote this so you know how the process works before you start talking to anyone who does.
Common questions
How much is the heat pump grant?
Since October 2026, up to €14,500 for a house and €11,500 for an apartment. It’s three grants claimed in one application: up to €10,500 for the heat pump, up to €2,000 for radiators or underfloor heating, and €2,000 for removing your old heating system. Whether you get all three depends on your installer’s design and on what you’re replacing.
Does my house qualify?
You need to own it, it has to have been built and occupied before 2021, it needs an MPRN, it can’t have had an SEAI heat pump grant already, and it has to pass the heat loss test, or pass it once you upgrade it. The guide explains the heat loss test and what to do if your home doesn’t pass yet.
What will it cost after the grant?
It depends on your house. SEAI’s median cost for a grant-aided heat pump job from January to June 2026 was €17,000 for a detached house, €16,741 for a semi-detached or end of terrace and €9,025 for an apartment, before the grant. The guide breaks down two sample quotes line by line, so you can see how the grant comes off.
Should I apply myself or use a One Stop Shop?
Apply yourself and you choose the contractor, usually pay them in full, and SEAI pays the grant to you after the work. An SEAI-registered One Stop Shop applies for you, manages the job and takes the grant off your bill upfront, so ask what they charge.
Can I start the work first and claim afterwards?
No. You need grant approval before any work begins or any materials are bought, and the work has to be done by a contractor on SEAI’s register. Start early and the grant is gone.
